The world is now your oyster and there are many experiences out there waiting for you to explore but if you are between 18 and 35 years old and looking for a true adventure then our Travel Partner, CONTIKI, have the secret formula. They live passionately by one philosophy – to travel with no regrets – which has served them well for over 55 years.
There are a wide range of journeys to chose from but here are our top 5 experiences:
LATIN AMERICA – Ultimate Inca Trail
Trek the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu this 8 day adventure commences in the city of Cusco – with it’s ancient Inca buildings, intricate colonial architecture, artisan shops and boutiques, delicious cuisine and adrenaline activities.
Cusco is the starting point for visits to Machu Picchu, and where you will get acclimatised to the altitude – helped by being served some coca tea, a traditional remedy for altitude sickness. Cusco is also where you find some of the country’s most exciting chefs with many of the dishes originating from pre-Inca times and served in unique restaurants. This city is a marriage of the historic and sophisticated modern, it is an unique experience and will leave you with memorable experiences. It is a magical place to explore on foot – check out the Plaza de Armas, the Cathedral and people watch in the square, enjoy the ancient Inca buildings fused with Spanish architecture – this mountain city oozes chilled Peruvian vibes.
From Cusco your private coach will take you through to the Sacred Valley, this is where your journey into the ruins and mystique of this land begins. You will stop off at a llama farm to see these furry favourites, including vicuna and alpacas up close and personal, also witness the ancient Incan art of weaving. Then on to explore the Pisac ruins before spending the night at one of Peru’s oldest towns, Ollaytambo. The following day you will begin the hike to Machu Picchu following ancient trails and spending three nights camping overnight with the mountains and the cloud forest as your backdrop. On the final morning you will arrive at the Sun Gate for your first glimpse of Machu Picchu (I must add that this was one of the best experiences of my life) it feels as if you are entering an enchanted land and exploring these magical ruins takes you back in time imagining life as it was in Incan times.
Returning to Cusco through the Sacred Valley stopping off at the weaving community of Chinchero, one of the great local causes supported by TreadRight.
From hot to cold!
ICELAND – Fire and Ice
Visit the Blue Lagoon on this 6 day adventure which takes you through martian landscapes, pretty towns and thundering waterfalls but your journey begins and ends in Reykjavik, the country’s capital and largest city, home to the National and Saga museums, tracing Iceland’s Viking history.
The following day you will visit the Golden Circle, visiting Iceland’s most intriguing, natural landmarks from the turquoise water ravines of Pingvellir National Park to the erupting geothermal geysers of Haukadalur.
Continuing on to Skaftafell and the rivers and glaciers of the Vatnajokull National Park and then on to Selfoss a town on the banks of the Olfusa river marked by waterfalls, black beaches and pony-sized horses with teal blue eyes.
Returning to Reykjavik you’ll have one last piece of Icelandic landscape to admire – the bucket list beauty of the Blue Lagoon.
Now Down under!
AUSTRALIA – Beaches and Reefs With Sailing
This amazing 14 day tour covers the famous East Coast of Australia, where both the cities and the beaches get trophied amongst the best in the world. These two weeks commencing in Sydney are brimmed full of awe – this tour can also be taken in reverse i.e. commencing in Cairns and without sailing if you would prefer.
Commencing in Sydney you will hit the ground running with a day trip to the Blue Mountains (which aren’t actually blue but definitely beautiful) where you will see the famous Three Sisters rock formation and have the opportunity to hike along the ridge overlooking Jamison Valley. Later, back in Sydney you can enjoy sunset drinks with a hands-on cook your own BBQ dinner – what an incredible start to your tour!!
Your second day is spent exploring this amazing city – visiting Darling Harbour, The Rocks and Mrs. Macquaries Chair Lookout and cruise across Sydney Harbour on a ferry from Manly – or if you want, or are not afraid of heights, you can add on the Harbour Bridge climb.
Leaving Sydney you will hit the road East Coast bound, stopping off at Port Macquarie before travelling on to spend the night at Coffs Harbour – where your surf bum dreams are about to come true – as you can learn to surf at your beachside surf camp.
Then on to another kind of beach paradise which is Byron’s Bay – visit the most eastern point in Australia and Cape Byron lighthouse for a mesmerising and (romantic) sunrise experience – enjoy the organic lifestyle and cool nightlife and if you are feeling energetic then you can add on some kayaking. Venture through the streets and soak up the hippie vibes before moving on to Surfers Paradise – it is really all in the name – so relax and enjoy some of Australia’s finest beaches and if you wish you can add on some tandem skydiving for even more thrills. Not forgetting your visit to the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary where you will see native Australian animals including kangaroos, emus, crocodiles, dingoes & Tasmanian devils.
On to Brisbane but before we sail our way into Queensland’s next much-loved coastal town, we’ll stop at the state’s capital, Brisbane. Enjoy some well known laid-back urban lifestyle whilst roaming South Bank & Queen Street Mall, then it’s on with our journey to “the Sunny Coast”. With the imposingly beautiful Glass House Mountains as our backdrop.
The Sunshine Coast never disappoints, our next visit is Noosa, drenched in natural beauty here you will find all your seaside town dreams rolled into one. From here we head to a UNESCO World Heritage site and the world’s largest sand island, Fraser Island. Your day will be filled with sand dunes, pretty lakes & dense rainforests, take a snap of Lake Mackenzie, known for its silky silica sand and intense glassy blue water, keep an eye out for dingoes as we cruise the world’s longest sand highway, then it’s back to Noosa.
Moving on from Noosa to Langmorn Station, a working cattle station, to experience true Aussie farm life and receive the warmest of welcomes from the farm owner and family ending the day partying outback style.
After breakfast the Whitsundays are calling and you’re finally doing your thing on the glorious Whitsunday islands. Two nights of pure undulated bliss are about to begin as we set sail from Airlie Beach. (NB Accommodation on board the yacht is multi-share only). Chill on Whitehaven beach one of the worlds top 10 beaches, swim, snorkel – do as much or as little as you like.
On to your final destination, Cairns, stopping off at Townsville, which never fails to impress with its Colonial buildings and checkered maritime history, before arriving in Cairns, one of Australia’s most buzzing little towns and gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, for a two night stay. This will give you the opportunity to take an add on – an Outer Barrier Reef Cruise – if you so wish but really a must to experience the beauty of this natural wonder.
This is the end of your tour but I suspect not your last trip to this amazing and vast country so it is not surprising that Contiki have numerous tours from 3 to 25 days for you to explore and experience the wonders of this amazing continent.
