Wild Alaska, the Wild Way!

Did you tune in to the BBC’s travel programme ‘Wild Alaska Live on BBC 1, if so then you will have watched the broadcasting of one of the greatest wildlife spectacles in the world, from one of the remotest corners of the Earth. Steve Backshall, Matt Baker and Liz Bonnin  took viewers on a live adventure across the vast wildernesses of Alaska to see some of the world’s most captivating animals and marvel at the scenery of a country so vast that it isn’t going to be spoiled by tourism  (but if you missed all or any of the 3 episodes then you can catch up on BBC iPlayer). The scale of Alaska is simply impossible to convey, it really is one of the last great wildernesses on Earth with some of their national parks bigger than our country with well over 5,000 glaciers.  So if you are thinking of planning a visit to this beautiful destination then we recommend that you take an organised tour such as those featured by our Travel Partner, Exodus Travels. Exodus Travels started life in February 1974 when two friends got together to provide transport in the Hindu Kush region a favourite hippie trail across Asia but from these humble beginnings the company has gone from strength to strength.  Now with over 40 years experience, Exodus is the UK’s original adventure travel company and world leaders in organising small group and independent travel arrangements.   Offering an impressive collection of holidays to choose from, from the untamed and adrenaline-fuelled, to simply taking an exotic corner of the world and immersing yourself in it, you will...

Mediterranean Magic in Menorca

Menorca is one of Spain’s Balearic islands in the Mediterranean Sea and a popular holiday destination with UK tourists, especially families, as it is more low-key than its neighbours, Majorca and Ibiza.  Our Travel Partner, Belleair,  has some hot offers featuring self-catering apartments or 4 and 5 star hotel accommodation – whichever suits your budget. Menorca is the easternmost Balearic island and is known for its endless long, sandy beaches, pine tree fringed coast and rocky, white sand, turquoise-watered bays known as “calas” which must be the most beautiful in the Mediterranean.  It is also a year round destination enjoying a warm, mild climate with over 300 days of sunshine.  In 1993 the island was declared a Biosphere Reserve in order to preserve the environmental areas such as the Parc Natural S’Albufera d’es Grau wetlands, and its liberal sprinkling of mysterious Bronze Age sites. The capital, Mahon, overlooks a large, sheltered harbour which is the biggest natural Port in the Mediterranean and second only to Pearl Harbour in the world.  The architecture of this laid back town reflects the legacy of the British occupation in the 18th century with British-style Georgian houses with bow fronts and sash windows but also has a church with 13th century roots.  Well worth a visit and after some exploring you can take a break in one of the many pavement cafes for some relaxation and enjoy the unhurried Menorcan way of life but don’t forget to visit Menorca’s vibrant capital on market day. The second of the island’s two primary towns is the historic city of Ciutadella, located in the west of Menorca it used to...

The Lions Roared in New Zealand

The Lions roared at Eden Park but still could not defeat the mighty All Blacks. Although to come away with an epic draw was no mean feat and for the fans who had supported the players on tour there was plenty to celebrate as well as enjoying the magnificent scenery of this uncrowded, green and peaceful country. Consisting of two main islands New Zealand has the best of old and new worlds with a mix of landscapes and cultures making it a top destination to visit as it really does have it all!  Also, as approximately twenty percent of the population were born overseas with many originating in Great Britain, it is no surprise that it is popular with British tourists. There is such a lot to see that the best way is to take an organised tour and our Travel Partner, Seasons, has an 18 day ‘True New Zealand’ tour which will not disappoint. (Image:  Eden Park courtesy Tourism New Zealand) New Zealand is arguably the world’s purest destination where vast open spaces are filled with jaw-dropping landscapes – where you will experience nature at its most raw and varied and understand why the locals call it “God’s Own Country”.  Constantly in the making, its geology being some of the most recently formed on Earth,  this exceptional wonderland also boasts a rich cultural diversity and the charming towns and vibrant cities offer unique Kiwi hospitality. New Zealand really is a heaven on earth with its snow-capped mountains to deep, crystal clear lagoons, plunging cave networks to raging rapids, the islands are a playground for thrill-seekers looking for the next adrenalin...
