Mediterranean Magic in Menorca

Menorca is one of Spain’s Balearic islands in the Mediterranean Sea and a popular holiday destination with UK tourists, especially families, as it is more low-key than its neighbours, Majorca and Ibiza.

Menorca is the easternmost Balearic island and is known for its endless long, sandy beaches, pine tree fringed coast and rocky, white sand, turquoise-watered bays known as “calas” which must be the most beautiful in the Mediterranean.  It is also a year round destination enjoying a warm, mild climate with over 300 days of sunshine.  In 1993 the island was declared a Biosphere Reserve in order to preserve the environmental areas such as the Parc Natural S’Albufera d’es Grau wetlands, and its liberal sprinkling of mysterious Bronze Age sites.

The capital, Mahon, overlooks a large, sheltered harbour which is the biggest natural Port in the Mediterranean and second only to Pearl Harbour in the world.  The architecture of this laid back town reflects the legacy of the British occupation in the 18th century with British-style Georgian houses with bow fronts and sash windows but also has a church with 13th century roots.  Well worth a visit and after some exploring you can take a break in one of the many pavement cafes for some relaxation and enjoy the unhurried Menorcan way of life but don’t forget to visit Menorca’s vibrant capital on market day.

The second of the island’s two primary towns is the historic city of Ciutadella, located in the west of Menorca it used to be the capital of the island’s culture and commerce so has an interesting heritage.  It is an attractive city with a fishing port where you can watch the fishermen bringing in the local catch of the day and dine in one of the waterside restaurants which line the quay or catch a ferry over to Alcudia in Majorca.

Our Travel Partner, Belleair, features a good selection of holidays to this idyllic island such as self-catering at the 3* Annabel’s Apartments. located on the south coast in Cala Galdana. Cala Galdana is only a 30 minute drive to Ciutadella and Mahon but with its fine white sand, crystal-clear waters and beautiful scenery, it is easy to see why the beach here is one of the best on the island with the fully-equipped apartments set in a quiet area only 800 metres from the beach.

If you would prefer hotel accommodation they feature the 4* Menorca Sea Club at Cala’n Forcat. This must be Menorca’s liveliest and most popular destination and whilst not that big in itself being joined with Los Delfines and Cala Blanes makes the area one of the largest tourist destinations on the island.  There is a good mix of activities for the youngsters with play areas, an arcade and a waterpark full of thrilling slides also plenty of relaxing, small, sandy coves with water ideal for snorkelling.  In the evening if you want a change from your hotel then there are plenty of restaurants serving fresh seafood or just have a few drinks looking out across the Balearic Sea.

If you would prefer 5* hotel accommodation then they have the Can Fasutino in  Ciutadella.   Ciutadella is very different to anywhere else on the island and a superb contrast to the beach and holiday resorts.  It is home to what is considered as one of Spains’ most attractive city squares and where you can wander along the pedestrianised old city with its many narrow streets and hidden delights where you will find great clothes and footwear shops.

Enjoy a taste of elegant former times with fine old 17-18th century palaces in the heart of the historic centre and it is here, close to the Cathedral of Menorca you will find your hotel, the 16th century Can Faustino,  this charming palace opens onto a tree shaded patio overlooking the ancient harbor.  Remodeled over the centuries and featuring a day spa, as well as a Turkish steam bath, a rooftop terrace and a sauna,  it now welcomes guests to the discreet luxury of its accommodation which has the warm atmosphere of a large family home, giving guests a true Menorcan experience.
